The Polish-English “PolTerm” Dictionary of Legal Terms with Definitions

This dictionary was prepared as a by-product of translation- and terminology-related projects implemented by the Translegis Publishing House since 1990 as regards translations of Polish legal instruments into English.

The preparation of translations for publishing required the development of detailed rules for their pre- and post-edition in the course of their regular updating in The Polish Law Collection, which covers approximately 50 translated Polish legal instruments. In order to ensure terminological consistency in translations, the “PolTerm” terminology database was created: it constitutes the core of the Dictionary. The terms for concepts of Polish civil and commercial law are extracted from approx. 50 Acts of Parliament, such as the Civil Code, the Labour Code, the Code of Commercial Partnerships and Companies, the Tax Ordinance, and other tax acts. All decisions concerning the strategy for translating and selecting English-language terms have been consulted with renowned lawyers and economists.

Apart from Polish terms and their English equivalents, the reader will also find definitions of the terms (extracted from legal instruments), both in Polish and English, which will not only help the translator understand their contents, but also facilitate the use of English language for the lawyer when referring to Polish law.

Tomasz Borkowski Tomasz Borkowski, PhD, graduate of Instytut Lingwistyki Stosowanej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw), terminologist for the Translegis Publishing, has been handling the pre- and post-edition of the regularly updated translations of Polish legal instruments into English making up the Polish Law Collection, as well as the development and elaboration of the PolTerm terminology database. He lectures on legal translation and the use of CAT tools at Instytut Kulturologii i Lingwistyki Antropocentrycznej UW (the Institute of Anthropocentric Linguistics and Culturology, University of Warsaw) and at Wyższa Szkoła Lingwistyczna (the University College of Social Sciences) in Częstochowa.
